Shillong, June 2: The State congress who is still awaiting communication from the State Assembly Speakers office on the Leader of the Opposition (LO) stated that there are no such rules as any opposition party has to have one sixth numbers in the House and there have been such precedence earlier.
Making it clear that appointing an LO is the prerogative of the Assembly Speaker, CLP leader and Mylliem MLA, Ronnie V Lyngdoh said, “May be he is seeking advice from legal and constitutional experts”.
Stating if they had one sixth the problem wouldn’t have been there, he however said, “But there is no such rules that they have to have the number”.
“They can always appoint LO, there has been precedence before where Late Dr Donkupar Roy was made LO when UDP did not have the numbers,” he reminded adding that ultimately it is the decision of the speaker to make.
He also informed that they will be writing and reminding the Speaker’s office once again on the issue.
The CLP leader said, “In a democracy we have the ruling and the opposition and if an LO post is there, it will be wise that we have an LO so that if there is anything to do with the opposition the government will know who to deal with”.
He justified, “if we do not have an LO we do not have a single party in the opposition but three and whom will you address if it has to be address to the opposition parties”.
