Host of activities planned on
World Environment Day
SHILLONG, June 2: As part of the World Environment Day Celebration 2023, the state government is organising a range of activities starting on Saturday with the Dorbar Shnong of eight localities namely Demthring, Nongrim Hills, Umpling, Rilbong, Demseiniong, Pynthorumkhrah, Nongmensong and Urkaliar in association with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) organising a community sensitisation, river cleaning and plastic clean-up campaign. The theme for this year’s WED celebrations is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. To further celebrate the occasion, the Forest and Environment Department and MSPCB will organise a bicycle rally at State Central Library from 7 am on June 5 to create mass awareness on saving energy, reducing carbon footprint and to remain healthy and fit. Meanwhile, the Shillong Municipal Board in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Professional Studies will also be organising a one-day awareness programme on June 5 through a short street play on ‘Zero Littering Programme’ at five strategic locations from 10 am onwards.

Mobile app to now monitor attendance of teachers in EJH
KHLIEHRIAT, June 2: Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Friday launched the School Attendance Monitoring System app, which is the first of its kind in Meghalaya, in the presence of East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner A Baranwal, among other officials and stakeholders. Addressing the gathering, Shylla urged the teachers to work in tandem with the district administration through the app. “I believe that this app will benefit the student community in terms of not losing out because of the unauthorised absence of a teacher,” the minister said. It was also informed during the programme that the app, as the name suggests, will monitor the attendance of teachers of various schools of the district. It may be mentioned that a 15-day period will be provided for all teachers in the district to get themselves registered on the app.
POWERGRID joins nationwide celebration of Swachhta Pakhwada
SHILLONG, June 2: POWERGRID recently joined the nationwide celebration of Swachhta Pakhwada by holding programmes in 23 locations, including in Shillong. According to a statement here, the objective of organising the Pakhwada was to generate and promote public awareness on cleanliness and hygiene. Some of the activities taken as part of Swachhta Pakhwada include cleaning drives, essay writing, slogan writing, debate and recitation competitions, distribution of cotton bags to small-time vendors, nukkad natak on promotion of solid waste management, et al.

Govt launches Nasha-Mukt
Bharat Abhiyaan in EJH
KHLIEHRIAT, June 2: Cabinet Minister Kyrmen Shylla on Friday launched the Nasha-Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan at Lad Rymbai Dongwah, East Jaintia Hills. The launch event was attended by Deputy Commissioner A. Baranwal, District Social Welfare Officer R. Passah, Senior State Coordinator Empowerment Ananya Majumder, among others. Addressing the gathering, Shylla urged the students and youths to abstain from getting affected by peer pressure. “Don’t be curious about how it feels to try drugs, be curious about things that will benefit your future and not things that will spoil your life,” he said. Shylla also expressed his gratitude to the ANTF and the Police department for their efforts in curbing the supply of drugs into the district. After the programme, the minister also flagged off a bike rally from Lad Rymbai to raise awareness on the negative impacts of drug use.

Programme in Shillong marks foundation day of Goa, Telangana
SHILLONG, June 2: In line with the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat programme, the foundation day of Goa and Telangana was on Friday celebrated at Raj Bhavan, Shillong. According to a statement here, the programme was attended by Air Marshall, Eastern Air Command, SP Dharkar as the chief guest in the presence of Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor, Dr BDR Tiwari. “The evening showcased the rich cultural tapestry of Meghalaya presented through the Shad Shoh Kba or the harvest dance of the Jaintias, Bharatnatyam dances presented by the Geetanjali Dance Academy and a musical performance by Sur Nongkyndong Orchestra,” the statement said. Organised by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Shillong, in collaboration with the Arts and Culture department, the programme was attended by senior officials of the state and central governments as well as representatives of the Goa and Telegana residing in Meghalaya.
