Host of activities organised on WED

SHILLONG/MAWKYRWAT, June 6: As many as 180 students from different schools in the state participated in different activities organised by the State Council of Science Technology and Environment (SCSTE) Meghalaya in collaboration with Shillong Science Centre as part of the World Environment Day celebration on Monday.
Poster presentations, exhibitions, popular talk by young local entrepreneurs, skits, puppetry show and also open Quiz, drawing/painting, essay writing and extempore speech competitions were the main highlights during the programme.
The theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Solution to Plastic Pollution’.
Secretary member of SCSTE, DB Gunanka, was present as the Chief Guest.
Around 60 students have been shortlisted for drawing/painting and essay competition both for junior and senior categories. The winners were rewarded cash prizes of Rs 5,000 for 1st prize, Rs 3,000 for 2nd prize, Rs 2,000 for 3rd prize and Rs 1,000 as consolation prize.
The three winners from each category were Bansahnam Shyrkon Nandini Snaitang, who secured the first rank, followed by Wankupar Swer Mangkyrpang Kharshiiing with second rank and Ilawankmen Marbaniang Stepphyrnai Shyrkon placed third.
Winners from the junior category were Banlamshwa War Orpha Niki Hynniewta, Tomanbga Pariong Tanvi Bhatia and Bakyrmenskhem War Phibanylla Lyngdoh Mawlong, who secured the third rank.
In Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills, a plantation drive was held on the premises of the Mini Secretariat and also at the Children’s Park in Laitlawsang as part of the World Environment Day celebrations.
The programme was organised by the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Soil Forestry & Territorial Division, West and South West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin, in collaboration with the district administration of South West Khasi Hills.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides also celebrated the day at its State Headquarters in Shillong by organising a drawing competition under the theme ‘Solution to Plastic Pollution’. State Secretary W Lyngdoh was the chief guest of the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh emphasised the need of taking action to conserve and maintain the environment as members of the Scouting/Guiding family. A total of 21 institutions participated in the competition.
The first prize was won by St. Margaret’s Hr. Sec School, while Laitumkhrah Hr. Sec. School and Synod Hr. Sec. School bagged the second and third prizes respectively.
