Umsaw villagers in WKH take out mass rally against ‘rapist’

NONGSTOIN, June 14: The residents of Umsaw village, West Khasi Hills, marched on a rally to condemn an accused, who has allegedly raped multiple minors, and sought action against the concerned person.
The rally was organised by the Executive Dorbar of Umsaw.
Villagers including schoolchildren along with members of Khasi Students’ Union, Hynniewtrep Youth Council, and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front participated in the rally displaying placards. After culmination of the rally, an awareness programme was organised by the North East Network, Shillong, in collaboration with the office of the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) and Police department.
Addressing a programme on crimes against children, West Khasi Hills District Child Protection Officer W Shabong highlighted various sections of the law. He told the people not to depend on the police to investigate the crimes, but to come forward and report them to department.
Meanwhile, Phidarilin Uriah of North East Network Shillong urged the parents to send time with their children to understand their problems even as she emphasised that the early years of childhood are a critical period for them.
