APS holds seminar; NEP, G20 figure in discussions

SHILLONG, June 15: A one-day state-level seminar on ‘Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN)’ was hosted by Army Public School in collaboration with the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, here on Thursday. The primary objective of the seminar is to create awareness on G-20 presidency, fundamentals of the National Education Policy (NEP), especially in FLN, to enhance the teaching learning process among teachers and students.
The seminar was inaugurated by Brig Jitendra Sharma, who was also the chief guest, in the presence of other eminent dignitaries. A cultural group dance was also performed by the students of the school.
A total of 65 participants from more than 31 schools across the state took part in the event, accompanied, by their respective school and vice principal.
The session featured a lecture on FLN by Dean of Instruction, Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar, Prof, Sandhya Rani Sahoo, followed by a panel discussion on NEP, moderated by retired Associate Prof Berylda H Buam.
The sessions accommodated insights from eminent panellists including Joint Director, MBoSE, M Marbaniang, Assistant Prof, Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT), Sandra M Nongsiej, and others.
The discussions revolved around the deliberation over FLN, and how various schools would deal with the new system of NEP.
Secretary of Planning department, Joram Beda, also gave a lecture on G-20.
During the programme, an inter-school Quiz competition was also conducted for participants, wherein a total of six schools, namely, JNV Mawphlang, BK Bajoria School Shillong, Army Public School, KV Laitkor, KV Happy Valley and KV NEHU, qualified in the preliminary round. Meanwhile, BK Bajoria School won the first prize, while Army Public School finished as the first runners-up. (Contd on P-4)

KV Umroi Cantt conducts workshop
Meanwhile, a one-day workshop on FLN under G20 was observed with great splendor at Kendriya Vidyalaya Umroi Cantt. The workshop was inaugurated by Col Nitin Goyal, who was also the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, principal S K L Varnwall, said that, the objective of India’s G20 presidency is to strengthen world economy social and political advancement.
PGT teacher Computer Science, Dilip Modi, PRT Pawan Kumar, gave a short briefing in their presentation about G20 presidency and FLN stating that the development of literacy and numeracy starts in the first three years of life and it directly connects with young children through everyday interactions, thoughts, and drawings.
Assistant Prof, NERIE, NCERT, Seema Nambiar, in her speech spoke about how the gap that exists at the foundational stage can be achieved by both parents and teachers. She also focused on transforming content based learning to competency based knowledge, which is the primary aim of FLN.
Chief Administrative Officer, ICAR, Sachin Agnihotri, throws light on the importance of writing, reading, speaking. According to him these should go hand in hand, in order to help students acquire knowledgeable skills and employment.
The event was attended by dignitaries from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Central Agricultural University (CAU), North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), ICICI Bank Umroi Cantt, Military Engineer Services (MES), teachers of KV North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA), Army Public School, Umroi and other eminent personalities of the area.
The programme was conducted in a hybrid manner, i.e. offline as well as online through youtube so that students and parents can watch the programme at home.
