SHILLONG, June 21: With Lok Sabha elections a year away, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Wednesday announced that party general secretary, Ricky AJ Syngkon, will contest the polls from Shillong parliamentary constituency.
While speaking to reporters, VPP vice president Kara Chen said that the state election committee, after extensive deliberations, has taken the decision to field VPP’s party general from the Shillong parliamentary constituency in the 2024 general elections.
“He (Syngkon) is the most deserving candidate to contest from the party in the parliamentary elections to be held in the early part of 2024,” Chen said, informing that the party had received a number of applications for the ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections.
Chen said that party president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit will not contest the Lok Sabha polls since he has to focus on taking care of the party.
The party vice president also said that they need the support of the people and not of any political party for the party candidate.
According to him, the deciding factor of the party winning or losing in the Lok Sabha elections is the people.
Making it clear that the VPP will fight the Lok Sabha polls on its own, Chen said, “Our ideology is different from other regional parties. It is difficult for them to work with the VPP.”
Meanwhile, he said the VPP will be able to raise various long-pending issues, including the implementation of the ILP, if the people vote Syngkon to power.
