Shillong, June 23: Following the confirmation by the US Coast Guard that the Titan submersible was destroyed in an implosion, renowned filmmaker and deep-sea explorer James Cameron expressed his belief that the submersible imploded shortly after losing contact with its surface support ship. Cameron, who is also a part owner of Triton Submarines, a company specializing in submersibles for research and tourism, drew his conclusions based on information provided by his sources.
Within an hour of the incident, Cameron received confirmation of a loud bang coinciding with the loss of communication from the submersible. “We got confirmation within an hour that there had been a loud bang at the same time that the sub comms were lost. A loud bang on the hydrophone. Loss of transponder. Loss of comms. I knew what happened. The sub imploded,” he stated.
Expressing his skepticism, Cameron also questioned OceanGate’s decision to construct a submersible with a composite carbon fiber and titanium hull. “I thought it was a horrible idea. I wish I’d spoken up, but I assumed somebody was smarter than me, you know, because I never experimented with that technology, but it just sounded bad on its face,” he admitted.
The US Coast Guard reported on Thursday that all five crew members aboard the deep-sea submersible Titan tragically lost their lives in a “catastrophic implosion.” The Titan, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, a US-based company, had been missing since it ceased communication with its surface support ship approximately one hour and 45 minutes into a planned two-hour dive to explore the world’s most famous shipwreck.
