HYC calls for inclusion of ‘impact of drugs’ in syllabi
MAWKYRWAT, June 27: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) South West Khasi Hills, through the Education Cell, on Tuesday moved Deputy Commissioner T. Lyngwa for inclusion of ‘impact of drugs’ in school and college syllabi so as to deter children and youths from indulging in such activities. Speaking to media persons after meeting the DC, Education Secretary of HYC SWKH, Pynskhem Kharjahrin, said the Council was very concerned with the increase in the number of drug users in the district in particular and the state in general. Stating that such illegal activities, which have ruined the lives of youths, are now trying to threaten the children, Kharjahrin said, “Right now we feel that it is very important to take immediate action to make the children, who are 12 years old above, understand the impact of drugs on human life through the schools. Therefore, the Council requested the DC to take this issue of including the topic ‘impact of drugs’ in the school and college syllabus very seriously so that the spread of drugs in our society can be stopped.” Meanwhile, according to Kharjahrin, the DC has assured of taking the matter up with the Education Minister.

BSF troops apprehend five Bangladeshi natls in WJH
Shillong, June 27: At least 10 persons, including five Bangladeshis, have been arrested in West Jaintia Hills, officials said on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, BSF troops apprehended five Bangladeshis and five Indians on Monday, including the driver of the vehicle in which they were travelling together on Dawki-Amlarem highway, a BSF spokesperson said. He said the Bangladeshi nationals had illegally crossed the border and entered West Jaintia Hills district. During preliminary investigation, the Bangladeshi nationals told the authorities that they had crossed over to India to settle down permanently, the BSF official said. The apprehended persons were handed over to police, which arrested them under various laws. (PTI)

Central official visits WGH, holds inspections, meetings
TURA, June 27: Central Nodal Officer, Ashish Kumar Saxena, Director, Government eMarketPlace, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, along with Technical Officer, Bhagyashree Sahoo, Scientist B (Hg), CGWB, SUO, Nagpur, recently visited West Garo Hills and held inspections and meetings. During the visit, a coordination meeting was held with the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner and concerned line departments to discuss the progress of Jal Shakti Abhiyan in the district. Various water harvesting structures and amrit sarovars of watershed and irrigation projects under Soil and Water Conservation department were inspected by the Central Nodal Officer. He also inspected different irrigation projects under the Water Resources department and Water Supply Scheme.
