Shillong, June 28: Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Vikramjit Sahney, has called upon the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the BCCI to include Mohali as one of the venues for the upcoming cricket World Cup in October-November 2023.
Sahney plans to meet Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary and ICC Board representative for India, to formally request the inclusion of Mohali in the list of venues for the cricket World Cup. He highlighted his concerns that while 10 venues have already been selected, including Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata, Mohali, with its highly-rated pitch and outfield according to the ICC Grading chart, has been overlooked.
Sahney emphasized that the Mohali cricket stadium boasts excellent infrastructure and superior facilities compared to some of the stadiums already chosen for the World Cup matches. Moreover, Mohali has the advantage of an international airport and several five-star hotels, providing the necessary amenities to host World Cup matches successfully.
In addition to the World Cup appeal, Sahney also urged the BCCI to consider including the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali for the upcoming India-Australia Cricket series.
He reminded that the Mohali Cricket stadium holds a remarkable legacy in terms of hosting Cricket World Cups in India. It successfully organized the historic India vs. Pakistan semi-final in 2011, and the momentous stadium also witnessed the 1996 semi-final between West Indies and Australia.
