SHILLONG, July 1: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) will write to the Law Commission of India, expressing its opposition to the Centre’s move to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin disclosed this on Saturday.
The citizens of Shillong have already expressed their concerns over UCC. They fear that it will affect local customs, laws and even the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Civil Society Women’s Organisation president Agnes Kharshiing said India’s strength lies in its diversity.
“The Constitution is for the people of India and not to please some political powers. If they have to implement UCC, it has to be first translated to every citizen of the country. People have to see what their representatives are implementing,” Kharshiing said.
Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, whose NPP is an ally of BJP, strongly opposed UCC. The UDP is likely to make its position clear after studying the different aspects of UCC.
“The UCC goes against the actual idea of India itself. India is a diverse nation and diversity is our strength,” the CM said recently.
He had stated that it would be difficult for him to go into details without going through the draft of UCC.
“We are a matrilineal society and that is what our strength and culture have been. Now, that cannot be changed for us,” the CM said, adding, “We realise that the entire Northeast, as a matter of fact, has got unique cultures. We want these to remain and not be touched.”
