SHILLONG, July 1: After NPP supremo and Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma openly declared opposition to the implementation of Uniform Civil Code, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has called his actions “another political gimmick” as drew parallels between the current scenario involving UCC and the brouhaha over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which subsequently became an Act.
The opposition TMC said that the NPP had given its consent to the CAB despite opposing it initially.
“It Just feels like another political gimmick … we have seen during CAA, they (NPP) opposed to CAB but when it was brought on the floor of the Parliament, they had a hand in accepting the entire Act. After the acceptance, the true colours of the NPP could be exposed to the citizens and the country,” said TMC state vice president, George B Lyngdoh.
It may be recalled that Conrad K Sangma had on Friday became the latest politician from the state to join the growing chorus of the anti-Uniform Civil Code brigade, saying that the proposed law goes against the actual idea of India.
“This time also, the lip service made towards the UCC that the party is against it is another political gimmick and at the same time it raises a question on the fundamentals of the party,” said Lyngdoh.
Casting aspersions on the ruling NPP, Lyngdoh said that on one hand it is trying to stay close to BJP, which leads the NDA Government at the Centre, but on the other hand, when it comes to UCC, “they have opposed it but when it is placed in Parliament they are a part of the same conglomerate, the calculation of NEDA”.
Stating that NPP’s actions are not a surprise as it wants to avoid backlash from the public, the TMC leader said, “It is an art that they have learned to excel in.”
It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had led a stiff opposition to the CAB, while NPP MP from Tura Agatha Sangma gave the party’s support to the Bill when it was tabled in the Parliament.
