Shillong, July 4: A 59-year-old man driving under the influence of alcohol recklessly collided with an iron girder on the road and subsequently crashed into the wall of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed on July 1 at approximately 2:20 a.m., the driver carelessly crashed into an iron girder before slamming into the wall near Gate No. 5 of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Upon hearing the loud impact, a PCR vehicle stationed near Gate No. 5 promptly responded and arrived at the scene, as stated in the FIR.
Fortunately, the driver emerged unharmed from the incident, although he was found to be intoxicated. The deployment of both airbags during the collision ensured his safety.
The police took the driver, identified as Mahabir Prasad, a resident of Onkar Nagar, to the nearby Ram Manohar Lohia hospital. The medical examination revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol. Consequently, Prasad was arrested.
A police official reported that a case had been registered at the South Avenue police station. The charges included rash driving or riding on a public way (Section 279 of the Indian Penal Code), mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees (Section 427 of the Indian Penal Code), violation of Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, and contravention of Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
