Shillong, July 5: Twitter has provided clarification regarding its recent decision to implement “temporary” rate limits on its micro-blogging platform. In a statement on its Business blog, the company stated that the move was necessary to ensure the authenticity of its user base and combat spam and bots that harm the platform.

According to Twitter, the sudden implementation of rate limits was intended to detect and remove bad actors who may have altered their behavior if they had prior knowledge of these actions. The company is focused on preventing these accounts from scraping public Twitter data to build artificial intelligence (AI) models and manipulating conversations on the platform.

Currently, the restrictions impact only a small percentage of Twitter users, and the company will provide updates when the work is complete. Twitter emphasized that the rate limits have had minimal effects on advertising. The platform remains dedicated to creating a better environment for all users.

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino commented on the clarification, highlighting the necessity of making significant moves to strengthen the platform in alignment with Twitter’s mission. She emphasized the meaningful and ongoing nature of this work.

Last week, Twitter owner Elon Musk announced temporary limits on post access to prevent data scraping and system manipulation. His clarification followed a major global outage on the micro-blogging platform that affected millions of users, including those in India.
