Shillong, July 6: Meta has officially launched its Twitter rival, Threads, worldwide, including in India. The app is now available for free download on Google Play for Android and the Apple Store for iPhones. Although Meta positions Threads as an extension of Instagram, it functions as a standalone platform with features directly inspired by Twitter.

Threads allows users to publish connected posts, similar to Twitter threads, and attracts Instagram customers by automatically granting verified users a blue tick on Threads upon signing up.

Getting Threads is a simple process. Users can download the app from Google Play or the Apple App Store and log in using their Instagram ID. If already logged in to Instagram, Threads will only require permission, eliminating the need to input login details again.

While Instagram is primarily known as a photo-sharing and multimedia platform, Threads focuses on text-based conversations. Resembling the old version of Twitter, each post on Threads can contain up to 500 characters, along with links, up to ten photos per post, and videos up to 5 minutes in length. Users have control over who can reply to their Threads posts. By tapping the three-dot menu, profiles can be unfollowed, blocked, restricted, or reported, and any accounts blocked on Instagram will also be automatically blocked on Threads.
