SHILLONG, July 8: Following the torching of vehicles within the premises of Laitumkhrah police station here, the city police have arrested five people in connection with the melee and arson.
All of the arrested individuals were produced in court, which remanded them to five-day police custody.
It may be recalled that a drunken brawl had broken out in the wee hours of Friday between two groups near the Health Complex in Laitumkhrah.
Following the brawl, the groups went to the police station to file FIRs. However, a police vehicle, a tourist taxi and a motorbike were set ablaze by some people who had gathered outside the outpost.
Moreover, the mob had also tried to snatch weapons from CRPF personnel who had just returned after patrol duty.
KSU concern
Meanwhile, the KSU has aired concern over reports of local youths being assaulted by non-indigenous people, while urging the Khasi community to remain united.
In a statement issued here, the general secretary of the union, Donald Thabah, expressed concern over such alleged assaults, especially in Shillong.
He recalled the killing of KSU member Lurshai Hynniewta at Pyntha Umdan in 2020, as well as the death of Phershanroy Myrthong at Golf Links in 2021, and Elias L Nonglait at Them Bijoy. Thabah claimed that there were other incidents of assault in Nongmensong, Rilbong, and 4th Furlong. Talking about one such incident of assault, the KSU leader claimed that a group had assaulted some Khasi youths but the CRFF personnel, instead of protecting the youths, resorted to lathi charge.
