SHILLONG, July 8: After around 13 meetings, the core committee of the UDP has compiled its list of recommendations on the reservation policy of the state, which it says is “non-discriminatory and acceptable” and will be submitted to the state government this week.
“We have made about eight observations from our part and we will be submitting it to the state government by Tuesday or Wednesday,” said UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Saturday.
The UDP had formed a core committee for fine-tuning its views and suggestions to be submitted to the panel on reservation policy and roster system headed by Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.
Informing that the committee had about 13 meetings, Mawthoh said that during its presentation to the Chief Executive Committee of the party, few more suggestions were raised and they were incorporated, which delayed the submission.
“We have a done a detailed study. We have also solicit the views of the lawyers, advocates, scholars to get their opinion also as this policy has not been reviewed in the last 50 years,” said Mawthoh. “We want to do this in such a way that it will be non-discriminatory and acceptable to all the reserved categories in Meghalaya,” he added.
Asked about the foundation of the recommendations, Mawthoh said, “Reservation basically is for the weaker sections but we have to look at other parameters. Also marginalised sectors objective is to raise them to a certain level”.
Clarifying the confusion that looms large with regard to submitting the recommendations, he said, “As per the meetings between different political parties, the chairperson of the committee had requested all political parties to give their views and suggestions. But as far as the expert committee is concerned, which the government decided to constitute, they are yet to be constituted. Our job as suggested is to present our views to the committee comprising all the political parties and this committee will also have to submit whatever suggestions to the expert committee,” he added.
