Priyansh becomes world U-21 champion in compound archery
LIMERICK, (Ireland) July 9: India’s Priyansh became under-21 world champion in compound archery, as the country’s medal tally swelled to nine medals, including five gold here.Priyansh defeated Aljaz Brenk of Slovenia 147-141 in a one-sided men’s U-21 individual final in the ongoing World Archery Youth Championships here on Saturday.Earlier, Aditi Swami had prevailed over Leann Drake of the USA 142-136 to bag the women’s Under-18 title.Priyansh had an intense opening round where the former Under-18 world champion Brenk levelled the Indian 29-all, shooting two arrows closer to the target.A composed Priyansh came up with a perfect round of 30 as the Slovenian crumbled under pressure following the promising start in the first end. Luis Suarez, only Spanish man to win Ballon D’ Or, dies
BARCELONA, July 9: Luis Suarez Miramontes, the so-called “Golden Galician” who is the only Spanish man to win football’s most prestigious individual award, the Ballon d’Or, has died, according to former club Inter Milan. He was 88.Inter did not indicate the cause of Suarez’s death when announcing his passing on Sunday.Although born in the northwest Spanish region of Galicia, the midfielder won the bulk of his trophies in Italy with Inter, including the European Cup in 1964 and 1965 and three Italian league titles. Suarez moved to Inter from Barcelona after winning two Spanish league titles.“Sadly his greatest and most successful period came when he was no longer a Barca player,” Barcelona’s website noted.Suarez won the Ballon d’Or in 1960 and was runner-up in 1961 and 1964. Rakshitha makes final in Para World C’ ships
PARIS, July 9:Vision-impaired Karnataka runner Rakshitha Raju qualified for the women’s 1500m final in the Para Athletics World Championships, here on Sunday.Accompanied by her guide and coach Rahul Balakrishna in the T11 category, the 2018 Para Asian Games gold medalist clocked 5:26.47 seconds in the second heat to qualify for the final on Monday.The first two in each heat and the next two fastest have made it to the final.Rakshitha has bagged the fifth place in a seven-member final field slated for Monday. Dutch goalkeeping coach to conduct camp
NEW DELHI, July 9: Dutch goalkeeping coach Dennis van de Pol will hold two special camps for the Indian men’ hockey team goalkeepers in Bengaluru ahead of the Asian Games scheduled in September in China’s Hangzhou.Van de Pol’s first camp with the Indian team will be held from July 13-19. He will return to India for another week-long camp from September 7-14.The Indian men’s hockey team will participate in the special sessions during a week-long camp at SAI, Bengaluru, to be overseen by India’s chief coach Craig Fulton.PR Sreejesh, Krishan Pathak, Suraj Karkera, Prashant Chauhan and Pawan Malik will attend the camp. Before the Asian Games, the men’s team will compete in the 100th Anniversary Spanish Hockey Federation.(PTI)
