Chennaiyin FC rope in winger Farukh Choudhary
CHENNAI, July 11: Chennaiyin FC have signed Mumbai-born winger Farukh Choudhary ahead of the forthcoming 2023-24 season. The 26-year-old became the seventh signing for the Marina Machans this season. He brings in vast experience to the squad, having turned up for three Hero Indian Super League outfits before with the latest being Jamshedpur FC where he spent five seasons. Choudhary was part of the senior national team which lifted the SAFF Championship title in 2021 and finished runners-up in the 2018 edition. He has made 14 international appearances so far. Choudhary, who made his ISL debut with Kerala Blasters FC at the age of 20 in 2016, has played 76 matches in the league so far, registering three goals and six assists. He was also part of Mumbai City FC’s ISL-winning campaign in 2021. (IANS)
Benjamin Mendy denies sexually attacking two women
MANCHESTER, July 11:Former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy denied sexually attacking two women at his retrial. The France defender, who was under contract to City until July 1, is accused of the attempted rape of woman A, aged 29 at the time, at his Cheshire home in October 2018. He is also accused of raping woman B, aged 24 at the time, at his home two years later.He has denied the charges at Chester Crown Court and said the incidents were consensual encounters. The jury of six women and six men have been told by trial Judge Stephen Everett that 28-year-old Mendy was found not guilty of sexual offences alleged by other women after a trial which ended in January. But that jury could not agree on verdicts on the allegations made by women A and B. (PTI)
Football brawl leaves woman dead in Brazil
SAO PAOLO, July 11: A 23-year-old Brazilian woman died, two days after she was hit on the neck by a bottle of beer during a brawl between Palmeiras and Flamengo supporters. Police said a 26-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the death of Gabriela Anelli, a Palmeiras supporter.Anelli was wounded as she tried to get into Allianz Parque Stadium in Sao Paulo for the Brazilian championship match on Saturday. Palmeiras and Flamengo drew 1-1.Palmeiras said in its social media channels that Brazilians “cannot accept that a 23-year-old woman be a victim of barbarism in a place that should be for entertainment.” The club urged authorities to investigate the case because it “hurts the image of Brazilian football.” A separate incident took place in another area of the same stadium shortly before Anelli was wounded, and forced the referee to stop play twice so the tear gas used by police could be dissipated. Lord Hanuman official mascot of Asian Athletics C’ships
BANGKOK, July 11:‘Lord Hanuman’, one of the most revered Gods in India, will be the official mascot of the Asian Athletics Championships starting here on Wednesday.The event is being held on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the continental governing body. “As Hanuman exhibits extraordinary abilities in (Lord) Rama’s service, including speed, strength, courage, and wisdom … Hanuman’s greatest ability is, in fact, his incredibly staunch loyalty and devotion,” the Asian Athletics Association explained on its website. “The 25th Asian Athletics Championships 2023 logo indicates the athletes participating in the games, skills, teamwork of athletes, showcase of athleticism, dedication, and sportsmanship.” The Indian team left for the five-day Asian Athletics Championships on Saturday (PTI)
