MAWKYRWAT, July 12: A herd of wild elephants went on a rampage in Iawpaw Hill under Nongnah area in South West Khasi Hills resulting in the destruction of plantation and houses. The incident occurred on late July 3.
According to a late report, the pachyderms arrived at Nongijngai in Iawpaw Hill and spelled disaster for 14 houses of farmers from different villages in Nongnah, who stay there while conducting work. Their plantation included betel nut, broom, bay leaf, etc.
Fortunately, no casualty was reported during the incident, villagers said. According to them, all the farmers had returned to their respective villages when the elephants went on rampage.
Incidentally, this was the third instance of elephant attack in the last one-and-a-half year. The farmers have suffered great losses.
Speaking to media persons, two of the farmers — Nimros Ramsiej and Lumlang Lyngkhoi — have urged the local MLA and the state government to address the pachyderm issue.
