TURA, July 12: The poor hygiene prevailing at the Tura Super Market has come to the attention of TMC youth leader Richard Marak, who on Wednesday urged the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) and the Meghalaya government to take necessary initiatives and restore the facility to its former glory.
“The situation at the Tura Super Market is unacceptable, and it is disappointing to hear that the authorities have not taken any action to address the issues. The sewage leakages and drainage blockages are causing a stink and have made its way onto the roads, causing difficulties for people passing through. It is unacceptable that the shop owners and visitors to the market have to suffer due to the lack of action by the authorities. The TMB officials have been visiting the market regularly, but it seems like they are just going through the motions and not taking the matter seriously,” Marak said.
The TMC leader stated that TMB CEO, Rikse Marak, had blamed the contractor for doing shoddy work, but that it was time for the authorities to take responsibility for the mess at the market.
He added that the promise made by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, to make the Tura Super Market a world-class facility is yet to be fulfilled, and that it was disappointing that the repairs were not completed before Christmas last year as promised.
Marak also questioned whether the contractor concerned has been taken to task adding, the lack of transparency and accountability is a cause for concern.
“It’s time for the authorities to take swift action and ensure that the repairs are done on an emergency basis. The shop owners and visitors to the market deserve to have a clean and safe environment. The authorities need to be transparent about the progress of the repairs and take action against those responsible for the mess at the Tura Super Market,” he said.
