SHILLONG, July 13: The High Court of Meghalaya on Thursday granted three weeks’ time to the state government to file an affidavit in connection with the petition filed by the family of former HNLC leader, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew seeking the court’s intervention for a CBI probe into his killing.
While hearing the matter, Justice HS Thangkhiew took note of the submission made by SA Laloo, the state’s counsel, seeking time to file the affidavit in view of the sensitivity of the matter.
The petition moved by Granary S Thangkhiew, the brother of the former HNLC leadert, has also sought action against the police personnel involved in the killing on August 13, 2021.
Earlier, Granary had said that they waited for two years to allow the government to initiate action against the police officials responsible for the killing. “We tried to get information in the case through the SP but nothing was forthcoming,” Granary said.
The family had also sought information on the steps taken so far based on the FIR that it lodged with the Mawlai police station on August 18, 2021.
Further, it sought information on the actions taken by the government based on the recommendations of Justice (retd) T Vaiphei who had conducted a probe into the killing.
