VIP culture on city roads
More often than not we hear: “Everyone is equal.” But is it so? The VIP culture on Shillong’s roads is obnoxious, to say the least.
Rules aren’t the same for all, it seems.
Even the Shillong Traffic Police can be found providing special privileges to VIPs in Shillong as their convoys move. Although stern warnings have been issued from time to time against overtaking, the same rules do not apply for VIPs. Massive SUVs overtake siren blaring amid chock-o-block traffic in the city.
It is understood that there will be emergencies on certain occasions. But these vehicles are found honking and zooming every single time, while also flouting traffic rules on some occasions.
Additionally, the VIPs get special arrangements when it comes to parking, it appears. A specified area has been marked near the Khyndai Lad roundabout for only vehicles of ministers, armed forces, government officers and workers to park.
What perks do you enjoy?

The dark city
There is a long-standing correlation between light and crime. Consider the phrase “in a dark alley” and think what comes to mind. Street lights are a proven way of reducing robberies, burglaries, property defacement, property damage, and other crimes that often happen in the dark.
There are several benefits of street lights. They enable safe passage for motorists and pedestrians, provide a sense of safe environment at night, improve the social and economic status of a city by promoting business activities and contribute towards aesthetics of a city.
In Shillong, absence of street lights, barring a few places, has given rise to some interesting developments. More often than not, you find cars parked in certain dark corners and the occupants raising a toast inside the comfort of their vehicles. They take advantage of the absence of street lights and have a gala time.
Some people with a criminal mindset also take due become active in the absence of street lights.
While street lights are a basic civic need, Shillong has always been “unsmart” as far as street lights are concerned.
It is time that the authorities concerned pay attention to this need of the city and set up a dedicated street lighting system to cover the entire city. It is altogether a different matter whether the MeECL will be able to provide uninterrupted power supply to keep them functioning throughout the night.
