Shillong, July 20: A day after a shocking video emerged in which two women being paraded naked in Manipur were seen, the main suspect has been apprehended by the police. The accused, identified as Heradas (32), was arrested in Thoubal district with the assistance of the viral video where he was seen wearing a green T-shirt.

The internet was shaken when a video of two women being paraded naked surfaced in Manipur’s hilly areas on Wednesday. The incident occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, a day after violent unrest erupted in the state’s northeast region.

In response to the shocking incident, the police registered a case of abduction, gangrape, and murder. They are making an all-out effort to capture the culprits involved, forming as many as 12 teams dedicated to tracking down the accused.

India Today reported that according to the police complaint, around 800 to 1,000 individuals, armed with sophisticated weapons, invaded B. Phainom village on the day of the incident. They vandalized and looted properties and set houses on fire. Suspected to be members of Meitei organizations, the miscreants triggered a wave of fear and chaos.

Five villagers, including two men and three women, managed to escape to the forest during the attack. The Nongpok Sekmai Police team later rescued them, intending to take them to the police station. However, the mob abducted the three women, resulting in one of the men being killed on the spot. The remaining three women were forced to undress, and one of them, aged 21, was brutally gang-raped. Tragically, when her brother, aged 19, tried to intervene, he too lost his life.

Union Minister Smriti Irani expressed her outrage, calling the incident “downright inhuman”. She confirmed speaking to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and stated that a thorough investigation is underway. Assuring the public, she asserted that no effort would be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh has prioritized the case, directing the police to conduct a swift and thorough investigation.

This disturbing incident has sent shockwaves through the nation, and authorities are determined to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
