TURA, July 20: Garo Hills-based group ACHIK on Thursday condemned the alleged act of gang-raping and parading of two girls naked by a mob of miscreants allegedly from the Meitei community in trouble-torn Manipur, videos of which have gone viral.
“The incident, which occurred in a remote village in Manipur, has sparked outrage and calls for swift justice. According to reports, the two girls were forcibly taken from their homes by the group of assailants. The perpetrators, allegedly belonging to a neighbouring community, then subjected the girls to an act of public humiliation by parading them naked through the village before committing the brutal act of rape,” it said.
In a statement released to the press, ACHIK expressed anguish and outrage over the incident, stating, “We are appalled by this barbaric act committed against the innocent girls. Such heinous crimes have no place in any civilised society and must be met with the full force of the law. ACHIK stands united with the victims and their families in their quest for justice.”
“The incident has also drawn attention to the urgent need for greater awareness and education regarding the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their ethnicity or background. ACHIK has called upon the government to implement comprehensive measures to prevent such heinous acts from occurring in the future and to strengthen protection mechanisms for vulnerable communities,” it added.
The organisation has also called upon the citizens to unite against such acts of violence and ensure that the perpetrators of this horrendous crime are brought to justice swiftly.
