Manipur viral video: House of a man accused of harassing women set on fire

Shillong, July 21: Two days after a viral video showed women paraded naked by a mob in Manipur, the house of the main accused, Huirem Herodas Meitei, was burnt down by miscreants.

India Today reported, protestors, mostly women, set the accused’s house on fire in response to the shocking incident.

The disturbing incident of women being sexually harassed occurred in a village in Kangpokpi district, following ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3. The video surfaced after an internet ban was lifted.

In response to the video, Manipur Police took suo moto cognisance and registered a case of abduction, gangrape, and murder against unidentified men at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district. Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the crime.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured that a thorough investigation is ongoing, and strict action, including the possibility of capital punishment, will be taken.

Since May 3, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was held in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, more than 150 people have been killed, and several others injured due to ethnic violence in Manipur.
