SHILLONG, July 23: Chaos erupted in the emergency wing of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) on Sunday after an accident victim succumbed to his injuries leading his family members and friends to claim that the youth had died owing to medical negligence.
Videos of the incident, which have gone viral, captured the heated arguments between the family members and friends of the victim and the security staff at the hospital.
A police team had to be called in to control the crowd and the situation was brought under control.
The deceased’s relatives claimed that the youth, who had sustained injuries on his legs in an accident near Umiam, was kept at the emergency ward and denied any medical treatment for four hours after which he succumbed to his injuries.
NEIGRIHMS officials have denied any negligence and said the institute tried its best to revive the youth.
“The patient was brought in at 12.20 pm. The youth suffered high-impact injuries on his chest. All life saving drugs was administered and even X-ray and ultrasound was done but despite the best attempts from the institute’s side, the youth could not be revived and he succumbed to his injuries at around 2.30 pm,” the official said.
Responding to the allegation of absence of doctors, the official said as many as seven junior resident doctors and three chief medical officers, apart from specialists, are available on call.
Meanwhile, attempts to contact the Director and Medical Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS failed as they were not in town.
