Shillong, July 26: The Central government has taken a fresh step by approaching the Supreme Court on Wednesday to request an extension of the term of Sanjay Kumar Mishra, the chief of the Directorate of Enforcement (ED). Representing the Centre, Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta requested the bench, headed by Justice Gavai, to consider their application filed in connection with the court’s previous judgment.
Mehta informed the court, “I am presenting a miscellaneous application. There is a specific prayer we are making that will require persuasion from Your Lordships on this matter… before Friday.”
As per India Today, the bench agreed to schedule the hearing for the application on Thursday at 3.30 pm.
Previously, on July 11, the Supreme Court had declared the third extension of Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s tenure as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief as “illegal” and in violation of their 2021 judgment. Despite this, the court allowed him to continue in his position until July 31 to ensure a smooth transition.
As per the government’s notification, Mishra, a 1984-batch IRS officer, was initially supposed to remain in office until November 18, 2023.
