NONGSTOIN, July 27: In an unfortunate turn of events, a bridge at Mawkaton village in West Khasi Hills gave way on Thursday while an overloaded dumper truck was plying atop it resulting in the vehicle falling in the ditch.
The incident resulted in traffic congestion in the area.
Since the bridge was the only link between Nongaksen, Laitkseh, Umlipoi, Mynnimawbri, Jaidoh and other adjoining areas, the incident is likely to affect the residents of the aforementioned villages.
Plying of overloaded vehicles on a daily basis is the reason behind the damage of the Mawkaton bridge, a villager said.
He also pointed out that the poor quality of the bridge is another factor that contributed in its breakdown.
After the incident, the Superintendent of Police of West Khasi Hills issued a press statement declaring that the road from Nongkasen village towards Umlipoi has been temporally closed.
In this regard all vehicles proceeding towards Mawkaton village or from Mawkaton village towards other destination are advised to take alternate routes through Kynroh village, the statement read.
