SHILLONG, July 31: The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) will seek a status report on the action taken over the incident in a school which falls under the jurisdiction of Dangar Police Station, where a teacher had allegedly forced a student to wear a garland of shoes and slippers because he could not speak in English.
“We have taken strong cognizance of this case. We are also concerned that such things are happening,” SCPCR Chairperson Iamonlang Syiem told The Shillong Times here on Monday.
She also stated that there is a need to make schools aware against such drastic measures of shaming and punishing a child.
An FIR in regard with the case was filed by the aggrieved parents with Dangar police.
They alleged that the incident occurred on July 21 in Mary Immaculate LP and UP School when the head teacher along with two staff of the school forced their child, a student of Class VI, to wear a garland made of shoes and slippers because the student could not speak in English during a class.
The student was reportedly forced to clean dustbins where the teacher allegedly spits after chewing betel nuts.
The FIR states that the school comes under the purview of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and most of the teachers are allegedly untrained and unqualified.
It may be recalled that the East Khasi Hills Police earlier issued a notice of appearance to the teachers of the aforementioned school.
‘NOT UNDER DANGAR’
Dorbar Shnong, Dangar, has meanwhile clarified that the school in question — Mary Immaculate LP & UP School — does not fall under the area of Dangar village. “…this school is located in Kamarphil village under the jurisdiction of Dangar Police Outpost, East Khasi Hills,” general secretary of the Dorbar, AL Thongni, said in a statement issued here.
Thongni further conveyed that the teachers’ fraternity of Dangar village and the adjacent villages are equally disturbed and aggrieved by the reported incident.
