SHILLONG, Aug 3: Exhibiting grit, BSF Meghalaya troopers foiled attempts to smuggle apparels and cattle in two separate incidents.
On Thursday, troops of 172 Battalion BSF rescued two cattle that were brutally crammed into two cars. The cattle were meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh through the international border in East Jaintia Hills.
The two vehicles were intercepted by BSF troops deployed at Sonapur Bridge, East Jaintia hills. On being signalled by the jawans, the drivers accelerated the vehicle towards Umkiang area. The BSF party pursued them for a while and managed to seize the vehicles.
The cattle were found in an extremely pitiable condition. The drivers, however, managed to escape the spot taking advantage of the dense forest along the road.
The seized cattle heads and vehicles were handed over to the police in Umkiang for further action.
Meanwhile, the 193rd and 4th Battalion BSF, acting on specific inputs, thwarted the bid of miscreants to smuggle clothing items (sarees and lehengas) worth around Rs 22 lakh approx, which were seized.
The smuggler, on being challenged by the BSF, fled from the spot taking advantage of the thick vegetation and undulating terrain leaving behind the consignment.
The seized items were handed over to the concerned customs office for further action.
