New body to promote tourism in Mawkynrew

Shillong, Aug 5: The Mawkynrew Tourism Sociaable Society (MTSS) was recently formed to take the lead in promoting tourism in Mawkynrew area to help people make livelihood and generate employment from tourism activities.
The MTSS will be closely working with the traditional heads of the different villages of the areas.
Mawkynrew MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh has been elected as the president of the society, Traibor Nongkhlaw and Pynshaibor Synjri as the two vice presidents while Olet Kharsahnoh was elected as the secretary among others.
The election of the office bearers of the MTSS was held at the community hall of the Thangsning Dorbar Shnong.
The meeting also deliberated on the steps which are required to be taken to tap the tourism potential of the area.
It may be mentioned that the area has many tourist spots like waterfalls which has the potential to attract not only local tourists but even tourist from outside.
Some of the tourist spots of the area are located in the villages like Laitlum, Umtong, Syntung, Khlieh-A-Sem, Nongjrong and among others.
While speaking on this effort taken by the society during the meeting, Mawkynrew MLA said that the tourism sector is a very important sector to provide sustainable livelihood for the people residing in the rural areas. According to him, even the Dorbar Shnong can generate revenue besides creating of employment opportunities to the youth of the area
“We will need to closely work together and the formation of this society is only the beginning how we can tap the tourism potential to bring about overall development in the area,” the Mawkynrew local MLA said.
Lyngdoh said that through this society they will be meeting the state government on the need to shift its focus how to develop the various tourism destinations of the area.
On the occasion, the local MLA of Mawkynrew distributed raincoats to the farmers who run smaller stalls to sell their agricultural produce to the tourists who visit Laitum.
Raincoats were also distributed to the local tourist guides.
