Place to wash clothes opened in Mawkyrwat through MGNREGS

Mawkyrwat, Aug 6: With a view to maintain the cleanliness of the Phot Umnew and Mawpon area under the Sala River in Mawkyrwat falling under South West Khasi Hills District, the Dorbar Shnong of Mawkyrwat on Saturday inaugurated the place to washes clothes which was constructed through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The President of the Seng Samla Shnong Mawkyrwat, Kitborsing Lyngdoh also declared that washing of clothes in the upstream area of Phot Umnew as well as the Mawpon area under the Sala River has been banned so that the cleanliness of the river can be maintained as it is also a source of drinking water for the people of Mawkyrwat and other villages.
Lyngdoh also remined the people of Mawkyrwat village as well as those from other villages that it is not allowed to wash huggies or pampers in this newly inaugurated place for washing clothes and littering of plastics is strictly prohibited in the area as it will pollute the Sala River.
Secretary of Mawkyrwat village, W.L. Snaitang said that if Egypt is called the Gift of the Nile, we can also call Mawkyrwat the Gift of the Phot Umnew as it give life to the people of the area. “We will beautify this river and it will become the identity of Mawkyrwat,” Snaitang said as he called upon the people to protect and maintain the cleanliness of the Sala River.
The project was inaugurated by the Myntri of Mawkyrwat village, R.R. Lyngkhoi in the presence of the Secretary shnong, W.L. Snaitang, Secretary VEC M. Turnia among others.
