Shillong, August 15: The town of Bardonecchia in northern Italy faced landslides prompting the evacuation of more than 120 residents and causing significant structural destruction.
Amid the unexpected deluge that began on Sunday and extended into Monday, the Merdovine River overflowed, flooding the usually tranquil town. Among those evacuated, six individuals were trapped in a swept-away camper van.
As per IANS, while some were taken to a nearby hospital, fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Despite damage to the local police station and main hotel, Bardonecchia’s mayor and regional governor acknowledged that the situation could have been much worse.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni assured government support for residents. This incident adds to a series of extreme weather events in Italy, exacerbated by ongoing heat waves and drought.
