SHILLONG, Aug 16: Amid a chase for government jobs, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said that jobs in government sector is limited, even as he added that the government is focusing on creating opportunities for the youth through entrepreneurship.
Addressing the Rozgar Mela organised by NEHU, Shillong, on Wednesday, the chief minister said that the state government has envisioned a multi-pronged approach to tackle employment challenge.
He acknowledged that government jobs and government agency jobs have been consistently limited, with figures not exceeding 1,200-1,500 positions annually, encompassing different sectors, departments, divisions, and district selections.
He noted that, despite some variations, the average number remains around 1,200 jobs per year.
The CM also emphasised that a holistic approach is essential to address this challenge. There are no definitive right or wrong answers but rather a need to take proactive steps at different levels to address the challenges pertaining to employment, he added.
Acknowledging the need for skill development and language proficiency, the CM spoke about opportunities for Meghalaya’s workforce to explore jobs abroad, especially in countries like China, Japan, Germany, the UK, and Australia.
Sangma further mentioned the government’s commitment to aiding in language learning and skill development to make these opportunities accessible to the youth. It may be mentioned that two of the global Fortune 500-listed companies — SODEXO and ADECCO — are participating in the Rogzar Mela.
Earlier, NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla had said that more than 2,000 or one-third of the positions have been reserved for female candidates who have passed Class 10 or 12, done ITI training, and are graduates or diploma holders in any discipline.
The companies are offering subsidised food, cab and other facilities apart from salary, he added.
The offered positions will be for locations across India with an opportunity to go aboard, based on the performance of the candidate and according to the rules and policies of the hiring organisation, the VC said.
Prof Shukla also stated the minimum qualification needed for the positions is Class 10 and the salary offered by the companies is more than the minimum wage of the state.
He further said NEHU, in collaboration with TimesPRO (Ed-tech vertical of The Times of India Group), is ready to offer 300 systems, applications and products (SAP) certification and training to the technical graduates free of cost.
A candidate has to be domiciled in Meghalaya to be eligible for the certification and training for Advanced Business Application Programming (ABAP), the VC said.
