Shillong, August 17: Devastating landslides caused by heavy rains have struck Manipur’s Noney district, resulting in a blockage of the Imphal-Silchar highway. Approximately 500 goods vehicles have been stranded due to the obstruction, officials reported on Thursday.

As per PTI, the landslides occurred along National Highway 37 between Irang and Awangkhul part 2, Khongsang and Awangkhul, and Rangkhui village on Wednesday. Efforts are underway to clear the road and restore traffic flow, as incessant rains in recent days are identified as the triggering factor.

These unfortunate events have the potential to disrupt the supply of essential items in the state, already grappling with ongoing ethnic clashes that have persisted for over three months. In June of the previous year, a catastrophic landslide claimed 61 lives at a railway construction site in the district.

As authorities work to mitigate the impact of these natural disasters, the local community faces significant challenges, compounded by the region’s existing circumstances.
