NONGPOH, Aug 18: Following an outbreak of epidemic conjunctivitis in Ri-Bhoi, the District Medical & Health Officer (DMHO) of Ri-Bhoi, Dr TS Momin, along with eye specialist, Dr N Kharnaior have advised people affected by this contagious eye infection to seek immediate medical attention at government hospitals.
They held a press conference at Nongpoh on Friday to address the growing concern over an outbreak of epidemic conjunctivitis that has affected numerous individuals across the district, including both adults and children.
Conjunctivitis, also known as “pink eye”, is contagious and can easily spread from person to person, particularly in crowded settings. “We are seeing an alarming increase in cases of epidemic conjunctivitis in our district. It is crucial for those experiencing symptoms such as redness, itching, and discharge from the eyes to not delay in seeking medical care,” Dr Momin said, while adding, “Prompt treatment not only helps in alleviating discomfort but also prevents the further spread of the infection to others.”
In addition to seeking medical care, health officials issued a stern warning against purchasing over-the-counter medicines from pharmacies without the guidance and prescription of a qualified medical practitioner.
“Misusing or self-prescribing medications can lead to adverse effects on the eyes and exacerbate the condition. It is imperative to consult a doctor before using any eye medication,” Dr. Kharnaior explained.
The health experts advised people to practice good hygiene by frequently washing hands, avoiding touching the eyes with unwashed hands, and maintaining personal hygiene to prevent the infection from spreading.
