SHILLONG, Aug 18: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is working towards establishing a unified voice among community leaders from five distinct areas of border disputes between Meghalaya and Assam ahead of the visit of the regional committees to the places. The border panels will talk to the locals, hold discussions with all stakeholders and look into related aspects before submitting their reports to their respective governments.
The KHADC held a meeting with community leaders on Friday. The idea was to encourage people’s participation, so they can voice their desire before the regional committees that they want to be a part of Meghalaya.
The community leaders who attended the meeting are from Desh Doomreah, Nongwah Mawtamur, Borduar, Langpih and Block-II.
KHADC’s Deputy Chief Executive Member, PN Syiem said the council wants to ensure that the residents of these five disputed areas express their desire before the regional committees that they want to be a part of Meghalaya.
According to him, the community leaders expressed that they all wanted to be a part of Meghalaya in view of their existing affiliation to the Khasi Himas.
Stating that these Hima leaders will educate people within their respective Himas, Syiem said this approach is aimed at garnering support from the local communities, which would ultimately aid the regional committee from the state during its spot inspections.
The regional committees from the two states will visit Desh Doomreah, Nongwah Mawtamur and Borduar later this month. Subsequently, they will visit Ri Bhoi and Block-II areas.
