St Anthony’s win two karate titles

SHILLONG, Aug 20: St Anthony’s won two team titles and finished as runners-up in one at the 29th Inter School and 11th Inter College Karate Tournament 2023, which concluded on Saturday. St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School were Boys’ School Team Champions, with St Anthony’s Lower Primary School as the runners-up in the same category. St Anthony’s College were also crowned College Team Champions.Shillong College finished second in the college category, while the Girls’ School Team Champions trophy was claimed by OM Roy Memorial Higher Secondary School, who finished ahead of Providence School. The tournament, organised by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association and supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. began on August 17 and ran for three days at the Multipurpose Hall at the Sport Authority of India’s Shillong Training Centre on the NEHU campus. The action was witnessed by a number of dignitaries, with the Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, S Shakliar Warjri, present on the opening day as the chief guest. Working President of the MSOA, John F Kharshiing, was present at both the opening and closing ceremonies and he was accompanied to the latter by not one but two former Olympians – Ian Campbell, who is spearheading the Elite Pathway Programme and Robert Kabbas, who has one Olympic silver medal as well as two gold and one silver from the Commonwealth Games in weightlifting. Other dignitaries included Finely L Pariat and Assistant Director Paia B War Nongbri, among others.

NEHU inter college football tourney to kickstart today

SHILLONG, Aug 20: The Sports Department of the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong will host the NEHU Inter College Football (Men) Tournament from 21 st August to 31 st August 2023 at the SAI Football Ground, NEHU Permanent Campus, Shillong. All together 32 colleges comprising of 700 participants will be participating in the tournament including coaches and manager. Matches to be played on the 21 st August 2023 1. St. Dominic College, Shillong v/s Ri-Bhoi College, Nongpoh 2. K. L. Bajoria College v/s Morningstar College, Shillong 3. NEHU Tura Campus, Tura v/s Sohra Govt. College, Sohra 4. St. Anthony’s College, Shillong v/s Don Bosco College, Tura.

Four Indian teams to participate in World Bridge Teams C’ship
MUMBAI, Aug 20: Four Indian teams will participate in the World Bridge Teams Championship which began on Sunday in Marrakesh, Morocco, with each category featuring 24 countries.The Bermuda Bowl for Open Team category is the most coveted of all bridge trophies at the world level, while the Venice Cup is exclusively for women’s teams.The mixed teams will fight for the Wuhan Cup, whereas the seniors – aged 65 and above – will compete for the D’orsi Trophy.The top eight teams in each category will play the knockouts.India, in zone 4, qualified for each of the four events after winning the trials held in Lahore in May.Indian Teams:Open: Joyjit Sensarma, Ajay Prabhakar Khare, Raju Tolani, Sumit Mukherjee, Jaggy Shivdasani, Rajeshwar Tiwari, Sandeep Thakral.Women’s: Anal Shah, Puja Batra, Asha Sharma, Bharti Dey, Alka Madhav Kshirsagar, Kalpana, Vidhya Patel.Mixed: Vinay Ishwarlal Desai, Himani Khandelwal, Rajeev Khandelwal, Marianne Karmarkar, Sandeep Narayan Karmarkar, Kiran Nadar, Bachiraju Satyanarayana.Seniors: Hemant Kumar Jalan, Sameer Basak, Subrata Saha, Sukamal Das, Badal Chandra Das, Pranab Kumar Bardhan.Chef de Mission: Ranjan Bhattacharya.
