NONGPOH, Aug 22: Nearly a decade-long delay in completion of a residential school at Mawtari Myrdon, Ri-Bhoi, has caught the attention of Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Ri-Bhoi, which took it upon itself to air the grievances on matters concerning residential schools in the state.
Alarmed by the state of the residential school in Ri-Bhoi, the HYC leaders conducted a study on these schools across the state.
The HYC said that Meghalaya is home to a total of 19 residential schools, with three of them located in Ri-Bhoi — at Mawtari Myrdon under Umsning Block, Nongrim Synjai under Umling Block, and one more in Jirang Block.
Members and leaders of the organisation are preparing to assess the conditions of all these educational institutions, it said.
President of HYC’s Ri-Bhoi district unit, Hercules Suting, and its secretary Shemphang Masharing, have collectively emphasised on the crucial role played by these schools in helping underprivileged families. They underscored the urgency for the government to proactively intervene and ensure the prompt completion of the construction process.
The HYC leaders have pointed out that the construction of the school was originally initiated during the 2012-2013 period under the leadership of the then Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma, during the MUA 2 government. The prolonged state of incompleteness of the school stands as an obstacle to students’ educational prospects. As a result, the association is making an appeal to the current government to take swift and decisive action, expediting the construction to benefit the youth.
The organisation has planned to convene a meeting with relevant authorities in order to pressure the government to address this pressing matter.
The HYC expects that the government will prioritise focus on completing the construction of the school and ensure that the youth can access its benefits in a timely manner.
