Shillong, August 25: Ayushmann Khurrana’s 2019 film ‘Dream Girl’ marked a departure from his previous roles, showcasing his versatile acting choices. The character of a seductive female phone operator named Pooja became a success, prompting a sequel, ‘Dream Girl 2’. However, the sequel’s execution proves to be a mixed bag.
As per India Today, in ‘Dream Girl 2’, Ayushmann’s Pooja transforms into a woman confidently adorned in alluring attire. Unlike the initial focus on close-up shots, this time Pooja receives a comprehensive cross-dressing makeover, utilizing visual effects (VFX) to enhance the portrayal.
The film assembles a cast reminiscent of early 2000s cinema, featuring Rajpal Yadav, Paresh Rawal, Asrani, Vijay Raaz, and Annu Kapoor. The writing, though, presents a blend of outdated humor that struggles to resonate with contemporary audiences. Nevertheless, the film manages to retain some redeeming qualities.
Ayushmann Khurrana’s portrayal of Pooja remains the film’s standout element. His challenge lies not only in replicating Pooja’s character but also in preventing it from becoming a mere caricature. Ayushmann’s ability to elevate even mediocre scripts shines through as he embodies Pooja, mastering every nuance from voice modulation to mannerisms.
Equally notable is his seamless transition between Pooja and Karam. The plot revolves around Karam and his girlfriend (Ananya Panday), grappling with financial constraints hindering their marriage plans. Karam’s unconventional solution involves moonlighting as Pooja and becoming engaged to a wealthy businessman’s son (Paresh Rawal). Naturally, the ‘Dream Girl’ premise weaves multiple subplots and comedic intersections between characters.
‘Dream Girl 2’, while featuring both strengths and weaknesses, demonstrates Ayushmann Khurrana’s commitment to his craft and his skill in transforming potentially formulaic narratives into engaging cinematic experiences.
