‘New education policy will be disastrous for students’

SHILLONG, Aug 30: The Meghalaya unit of Trinamool Congress (TMC) has asked the state government to put on hold the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, warning that it will be disastrous for the future of the students.
“This will destroy the future of our children,” TMC state president Charles Pyngrope told reporters on Wednesday.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma have already made it clear that the state will go ahead with the implementation of NEP.
Talking about his recent meeting with the principal of St Edmunds College, Pyngrope stressed that an expert committee should be constituted to discuss the matter threadbare.
“A re-thinking has to be done before implementing this policy,” he said.
“I believe the state government has an education commission in place with experts as its members. I think the experts should dwell at length on this issue and give ideas and suggestions,” Pyngrope said, adding until such time, the implementation of NEP should be put on hold.
Even as the conflict surrounding the issue continues, Adviser to Education department, HM Shangpliang had on Tuesday said the government has plans to implement NEP also at the secondary and higher secondary levels.
He said the Textbook Review Committee would submit its suggestions and recommendations to the government for a new syllabus and new curriculum with focus on local content.
Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association and North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association stand opposed to NEHU’s decision to implement NEP from the current academic session.
Earlier, TMC had appealed to MCTA and NEHU Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla to come up with a mutually-agreed upon roadmap and end the stalemate on the issue.
Shukla invited MCTA for an open discussion but the latter has not yet made a decision on the offer.
