SHILLONG, Sep 3: The decision of the central government to convene a special session of the Parliament from September 18 to 22 has come as a huge surprise for UDP vice president PT Sawkmie.
In a statement on Sunday, Sawkmie pointed out that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is one of the issues listed in the agenda of the business session. He recalled the vehement opposition to UCC implementation, adding that the UDP had also sent a letter expressing opposition to such a move.
Sawkmie said that the law commission has received more than 46 lakh petitions opposing the UCC.
The UDP is optimistic that the Prime Minister will respect the views of various party and religious leaders from Meghalaya and other Northeastern states on UCC implementation.
According to him, there is a possibility that the Centre may exempt Meghalaya from the purview of the UCC only on the grounds of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in the state.
