Tura, Sep 3: A woman, identified as Hema Malini Koch, has been arrested by West Garo Hills Police after she allegedly decapitated her daughter before burying her body within their compound in the village of Haripur under Garobadha police station.
The 36-year-old woman, who was arrested on Saturday, has remained uncooperative with police efforts to ascertain the cause of her actions. She is currently in judicial custody and is being questioned.
According to police sources, Koch allegedly murdered her 7-year-old daughter when she was left alone in the house with her. After decapitating the girl, she hurriedly dug a makeshift grave behind her house where she buried the remains.
The incident apparently took place on the morning of Friday, when her husband had gone fishing to the nearby river while her son was with a relative.
Her father, upon returning thought the daughter was away at school. However when he went behind the house, he found the makeshift grave and discovered his daughter’s remains buried within.
Police were informed of the incident following which the body was exhumed on Saturday.
“She has remained non cooperative during questioning on why she took such an extreme step. We are investigating the case to find out what exactly happened,” South Garo Hills SP, Abraham T Sangma said.
Police have not ruled out witchcraft in the case though no evidence so far has suggested this to be the case.
Meanwhile, the SP said an attempt was made to complete a psychiatric assessment of the mother but she was non cooperative.
