Guwahati, Sept 7: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday pledged that the flow of development in Barak Valley in the coming years would be relentless.
Inaugurating and laying foundations for a slew of projects, worth Rs 767 crore, in Barak Valley, the chief minister said that the state government has laid top priority on improving communication and transportation across the southern Assam districts.
Sarma inaugurated 75 schemes, encompassing 18,869 beneficiaries from eight legislative Assembly constituencies in the region, besides inaugurating five schemes involving a financial outlay of Rs 229 crore. He also laid the foundation for four projects worth Rs 538 crore.
Foundations were laid for an integrated DC office of Cachar, involving an outlay of Rs 48 crore; a convention centre worth Rs 16 crore in Silchar; improvement of a 22-km road from Borkhola to Kalain, involving Rs 210 crore, and another 24-km road from Cechabari to Hailakandi, involving Rs 264 crore.
On the other hand, the chief minister also inaugurated three bridges over the Barak River and unveiled a statue of Lachit Borphukan on the premises of the Cachar DC’s office. He also unveiled a statue of Atal Behari Vajpayee in Hailakandi.
Speaking at a public meeting held at DSA field in Silchar, Sarma announced that another bridge would be constructed at Silghat. “The three bridges inaugurated today will not only improve communication in the region, but will also bring about overall development in Barak Valley.
The chief minister further said that the Assam government has taken steps to implement Jal Jeevan Mission in the state very assiduously.
Later, Sarma visited Hailakandi district and addressed a public rally at DSA field.
“The state government will take up a scheme worth Rs 60 crore to address the drinking water problem in Hailakandi. A similar project will also be taken at Lala. Besides, Rs 200 crore will be spent for the development of roads in Hailakandi district,” he said.
