Umiam dam water may be released
Nongpoh Sep 6: The Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi on Wednesday said that the water level of Umiam reservoir has risen and the water could be released anytime in case of further rise above the safe level. The DC has requested people residing downstream of the Umiam dam to be cautious and not venture into rivers/streams so as to avoid unfortunate incidents. In case of flood, people should also keep away from electric poles or power lines to avoid electrocution.

 

Group seeks market in Iawmusiang
Jowai, Sep 6: Leaders of Jaintia National Council (JNC) on Wednesday met Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhlang Dhar seeking the construction of the pending Jowai market (Iawmusiang), which, according to the JNC, helped the locals improve their source of income. The construction work of the said market was stopped and since then it has been pending for over a decade affecting the livelihood of the people who depend on the market. JNC also remind the Deputy CM about the proposed Mini Secretariat (Integrated Development Complex) in every district with an aim to bring the administration closer to the people. The JNC also told the minister to look into the issue of residential schools and a teacher’s training centre at Byndihati in East Jaintia Hills among other matters.

 

18 dairy co-op societies get vehicles
SHILLONG, Sep 6: The Directorate of Dairy Development on Wednesday handed over the ‘milk transportation and testing vehicles’ under National Programme for Dairy Development to a total of 18 dairy co-operative societies of the state at Central Dairy Campus, Mawiong, in the presence of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister AL Hek. Speaking on the occasion, the minister, acknowledging that dairy farming in the state is still in the developing stage, encouraged the people to engage in dairy farming to boost the productivity of dairy products and to be self-sufficient. He also called upon the private sector to work together with the government in maximising production and also generate job opportunities for the youth. During the programme, the minister handed over the keys to the dairy co-operative societies and flagged off the vehicles from the venue.

 

ABVP confers student awards
SHILLONG, Sep 6: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Meghalaya unit conferred the ‘U Tirot Sing Best Student Award-2023’ on meritorious students at a function in SoSo Tham Auditorium recently. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was the chief guest of the occasion besides a host of other esteemed dignitaries. More than 150 toppers of SSLC and HSSLC examination 2023 along with their parents attended the programme.
