BSF rescues cattle, foils smuggling bid

SHILLONG, Sep 9: Acting on specific tip-off, the BSF troops managed to rescue around 96 cattle from the international border of East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills on Friday.
A statement issued here on Saturday said that the cattle were brought to the international border for smuggling to Bangladesh.
The smugglers were intercepted by the alert troops of the BSF comprising the 4th and 193rd Battalions of BSF while they were trying to smuggle the cattle towards the international boundary. When challenged by BSF troops, the smugglers fled away, taking advantage of the undulating terrain, and left the cattle behind.
In another operation, troops of the 43rd Battalion of the BSF along with the Meghalaya Police apprehended the driver and seized a vehicle loaded with huge quantity of sugar intended for smuggling into Bangladesh from the South Garo Hills, near Rongra.
According to the statement here the driver was apprehended as he failed to provide valid justification regarding the sugar consignment.
The driver and the consignments were later handed over to the concern police station for further legal action.
