Guwahati, Sept 12: The Assam Governor has sanctioned the creation of 79 sub-divisions for administrative expediency, to derive maximum synergy, productivity and efficiency at the grassroot level and to facilitate a citizen-centric administration

“The Governor of Assam is pleased to sanction creation of 79 subdivisions, which shall also be known as sub-districts within their respective administrative districts with immediate effect. The geographical limits of the subdivisions/sub-districts shall be co-terminus with the boundaries of the Legislative Assembly constituencies,” a notification issued by the additional chief secretary, general administration department, Assam, read.

“The headquarters of the proposed subdivisions/sub-districts will be in a central location of the sub-districts or any other appropriate location to be decided by the district commissioner of the district. In case of any dispute/confusion regarding headquarters of any sub division/sub-district, the headquarters of subdivisions/sub-districts will function from the district headquarter till the dispute/confusion is resolved,” the notification read.

“The existing civil subdivisions except those under Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) districts and Sixth Schedule districts will cease to exist, with immediate effect,” it read.

The notification further stated that the nomenclature of the sub-division and sub-district will be used interchangeably.
