Mechanised cark parking spaces to come up near Additional Secretariat & Polo Market Complex

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, Sep 11: The Shillong Smart City Limited has invited bids for “design, build, operate, maintain and transfer” of Mechanised Multi-level Car Parks (MMLCP) at Vivekananda Road near the Additional Secretariat and Polo Commercial Complex.
The plot of land at Vivekananda Road, commonly called CTO (Central Telegraph Office) Parking Lot, is also often used by political parties and organisations to organise programmes, including protests and demonstrations.
The Rs 6.5-crore project will be developed at a site measuring 632 square metres. A maximum of 58 cars could be parked at a time.
The bidding document states the existing on-street parking of private cars and taxis at Vivekananda Road, which reduces effective carriageway for traffic movement, will be shifted to MMLCP to reduce the burden on the road.
There is a public toilet at the site where on-street parking also takes place. The area serves as a taxi stand and parking space for Additional Secretariat staff. The construction of mechanized fully automatic multi-level car parking facility has been proposed on the existing public toilet and on-street parking.
Private cars and taxis are also parked along the street at Polo Junction and Polo Tower, which reduces effective carriageway for traffic movement. The on-street parking will be shifted to MMLCP to reduce the burden on the road.
The project, being conceived at a cost of Rs 36.5 crore, is expected to enhance the existing capacity of the road for commuting.
The site, measuring 1,868 square metres, has the Polo Commercial Complex on one side and the Wah Umkhrah river on the other side. The project will be able to accommodate 347 cars.
