Nongpoh, Sep 15: In a move aimed at enforcing local regulations, and to check rampant illegal estalishments, around 46 shops owned by non-tribals in Byrnihat area, Ri Bhoi were sealed by the KHADC following failure to produce valid trading license.
The KHADC members and other officials led by CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem carried out a surprise inspection of trading license from non-tribal shopkeepers in Byrnihat up to Khanapara, on Friday.
In the operation also accompanied by members of pressure groups such as the KSU and the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), many shops owned by non-tribals were found to have been operating without obtaining the requisite trading license from the KHADC.
Explaining the reason behind the council’s action, the CEM said the failure of the non-tribal shopkeepers to comply with the council’s order to obtain necessary trading licenses and valid document from the KHADC has compelled us to take such step.
The CEM has instructed concerned officers to close down and issue show cause notices to all the business establishments to obtain all requisite papers and trading license within one week. There are still numerous illegal establishments along the stretch of the National Highway from Byrnihat to Khanapara operating without valid licenses, he added.
