SHILLONG, Sep 20: UDP MLA from Mookaiaw, Nujorki Sungoh has asked the state government to do away with personal interviews conducted during the recruitment for Grade IV jobs.
“There is a need to do away with the personal interview to ensure transparency in the recruitment process,” Sungoh said, while raising the matter in the House during the Question Hour on Wednesday.
Stating that the Centre has done away with the personal interview in recruitment to Grade IV jobs since 2016, Sungoh said that the state government can take a decision on similar lines as the central government.
Moreover, there are around 23 states and eight Union Territories which have done away with personal interview, he added.
The Mookaiaw MLA sought Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s intervention in scrapping personal interview so as to ensure no favouritism or nepotism.
Sungoh shared a personal experience with the House recalling how his friend, with a graduate degree, did not qualify during personal interview for a state government job but another applicant, who had passed Class X, was selected.
Responding to his concerns, the Chief Minister assured that the government will come up with a comprehensive policy in the recruitment process of Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC).
According to Conrad, the government will examine all aspects ahead of introducing any reform.
He recalled that the former Chief Minister, in 2017, had written to the Centre apprising the latter about the intention of the then state government to not do away with the personal interview criterion.
“But we are examining the pros and cons, and all the aspects. We want to make sure that whatever decision is taken will be to provide better opportunities to the youth of the state,” he said.
